The collision protection device for a rail vehicle has energy absorption elements (1) each constructed as a cup (1a) open at the front in the direction of impact and filled with energy-absorbing material (4). The cup is rigidly connected to a thrust component which in its turn is longitudinal movable in relation to the body of the vehicle and connected to it by a second step for the absorption of additional deformation energy. The units for the driver, including the driver's seat, are fastened on the thrust component and together with it are longitudinally movable inside the vehicle.
