A vessel (4) filled with liquid (5) is rotated so that the surface of the liquid becomes semi-paraboloidal. A chain (3) with a pre-determined configuration is then contacted with the surface of the liquid. The subsequent movement of the chain generates energy which can be utilised or stored.
