PURPOSE: To obtain metallic pigments which are free from crocking, insufficient saturation, etc., and has colors, etc., exclusive of golden color by frictionally grinding titanium powder under specific conditions, then heating the powder to form coherent oxidized films on the surfaces. ;CONSTITUTION: The titanium flakes are the flaky titanium powder which have the smooth surfaces and have the coherent oxidized films on the surfaces. The average thickness of these flakes is 0.1 to 1.0μ, the average grain size is 5 to 50μ and the thickness of the coherent oxidized films calculated from the specific surface area and the oxygen content is 100 to 1000Å. The powder is obtd. by frictionally grinding the titanium powder having an average grain size of about 1 to 30μ with a wet process ball mill in the presence of a frictionally grinding or pulverizing liquid medium and frictionally grinding or pulverizing assistant. At this time, the frictionally grinding is so executed that the average thickness and average grain size of the flakes attain the values described above and that the specific surface area attains about 0.2 to 1.0m2/g.
