A surface acoustic wave device with a low loss surface (1) comprises a piezoelectric substrate (2), an assembly of conducting electrodes (3) and a thin layer (4) of dielectric material with a hardness and dielectric permittivity greater than that of the substrate and deposited in an essentially uniform manner on the surface of the substrate with the electrodes being arranged on this layer.
