Optical surface finishing apparatus comprises a selective conformable substance (24) in its non-solid form permitting movement of a work surface (22) relative to a base surface and in solid form fixes the work surface in position conforming to curvature of optical surface. A pad compensating device in between work surface and optical surface compensates for thickness of finishing pad. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) Method for finishing a selected optical surface; and (2) Conformable lap for finishing optical surface.
