Method has the following steps: (a) measurement of internal and external diameters of the arterial wall as well as the blood pressure using a non-invasive method (b) choice of a law or combination of laws for modeling the behavior of the wall (c) establishment of equation systems taking into account measured pressure and diameter values (d) mathematical determination of characteristic constants for the wall behavior (e) repetition of step C until a better match for constraints and deformations is obtained from which arterial rigidity is deduced. The invention also relates to a corresponding device with an oscillometric bracelet (1) for measuring blood pressure and an ultrasonic sensor (2) for measuring blood vessel thickness.
