Nanocapsules with an average size of 50-800 nm comprise a lipid core comprising a lipophilic active ingredient and a water-insoluble polymer shell comprising a water-dispersible colored sulfo-functional polyester (I). Independent claims are also included for: (1) topical composition comprising the nanocapsules and a carrier; and (2) production of colored nanocapsules by dissolving a lipid phase comprising a lipophilic active ingredient and optionally a coating agent in an organic solvent boiling below water, combining the solution with an aqueous dispersion of (I) containing a hydrophilic surfactant, and evaporating the solvent and optionally part of the aqueous phase.
