PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for a vertically aligned membrane capable of aligning a liquid crystal molecule to have a large pretilt angle and giving excellent liquid crystal display element properties and provide a method for producing the vertically aligned membrane.;SOLUTION: The composition for a vertically aligned membrane contains an azo compound of general formula (1) in an amount of 0.5-50 mass%. The method for the production of the vertically aligned membrane comprises the coating of a substrate with the composition for vertically aligned membrane, the removal of the organic solvent and the irradiation of the product with non-polarized ultraviolet ray from a slant direction. In general formula (1), R¹ is hydroxy or a polymerizable group; R² and R³ are each a linking group; R⁴ is a halogen atom, carboxy group, a halogenated methyl group, a halogenated methoxy group, cyano, nitro, methoxy or methoxycarbonyl group; and R⁵ is carboxy, sulfo, nitro, amino or hydroxy group.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
