PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for monitoring the application of a viscous material, such as an adhesive, in a pattern, onto one or more strands. PSOLUTION: The apparatus and method comprise monitoring the application of a viscous material onto at least one or more moving strands. A detecting unit, such as a machine vision system, an IR sensor, an UV detector, or a light curtain having a plurality of detectors senses radiation originating from the viscous material after it is applied to the one or more strands and, typically, before the respective strands come into contact with a substrate. The detecting unit determines the detected values representative of the characteristics of the pattern from the sensed radiation, compares the detected values with a reference value representing a desired standard for the characteristics, and outputs a signal according to the result of the comparison.
