PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for measuring the film thickness of a lubricant in a magnetic recording medium, which can easily measure the film thickness of the lubricant in real time and can perform an in-line feedback in order to always make the film thickness optimal.;SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium 10 is prepared by coating a lubricant layer 14 on the surface of a magnetic body thin film (magnetic layer 12) formed on one surface of a substrate layer 11. The surface of the lubricant layer 14 is irradiated with ultraviolet rays 33 from a sensor head 31, and the amount of photoelectrons 34 emitted from the surface of the magnetic body thin film (magnetic layer 12) irradiated with the ultraviolet rays is measured. The amount of electrons is reduced through the lubricant layer 14. Thus, the film thickness of the lubricant layer 14 is obtained by an amplifier 32 and a measurement data processing section 40 based on the fact that the measured amount of photoelectrons has a correlation with the film thickness of the lubricant layer 14.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
