PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control a clutch for connecting an engine to the powertrain of an HEV. PSOLUTION: The system includes a controller 38 programmed to determine a filtered speed error of the engine 20 and a starter/motor 24 and to determine an engine run command. A monitoring device operatively connected to the engine 20 and the starter/motor 24 is connected to the controller 38 to output data representing the engine 20 and starter/motor 24 speeds. The controller 38 is programmed to generate a clutch position command to a servo-actuator 26 connected to the clutch dependently on the data. The method for controlling such a clutch is further provided, including the steps of determining an engine run command, and determining a filtered speed error of the engine 20 and a starter/motor 24.
