PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mute for a Taisho lyre capable of muting the sound volume of the Taisho lyre. SOLUTION: A body 21 is disposed between a surface plate 3A and strings 4 (as shown in Figure (a)), the body 21 is pulled up by one hand until a gap for inserting a slide member 22 is formed between the surface plate 3A and a groove 27, and then the slide member 22 is inserted between the groove 27 and the surface plate 3A (as shown in Figure (b)). As the slide member 22 is inserted, the body 1 is raised and a felt 26 bonded to a first surface 24 is brought into contact with high-pitched strings 4A while a felt 26 bonded to a second surface 25 is brought into contact with a low-pitched string 4B. When the strings 4 are played, their vibrations are absorbed by the felts 26 in contact with the strings 4, and thus the vibrations of the strings 4 are not transmitted via bridges to a sound chamber 3.
