The present invention provides the transcription regulatory region for the GS_1-2 gene. The GS_1-2 transcription regulatory region effectively drives the pedicel-specific expression of an operably linked gene. Thus, the disclosed transcription regulatory region provides an invaluable tool for affecting seed assimilation and development and for increasing fungal and disease resistance. Recombinant DNA constructs and methods for affecting seed development and disease resistance are provided.
