PROCESS FOR REDUCING TOTAL SULPHUR CONTENT IN GASES CONTAINING HYDROGEN SULPHIDE AND OTHER SULPHUR COMPONENTS

The process of the present invention reduces the total sulfur content of gases containing hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur-containing components by (a) contacting the gas with a reducing gas in the presence of a single hydrogenation catalyst containing at least one metal component as defined in VI.B. and VIII. selected from the group consisting of amorphous silica-alumina support; (b) contacting at least a portion of the gas obtained in step (a) with a hydrolysis catalyst capable of catalyzing the hydrolysis of the carbonyl sulfide to hydrogen sulfide; and (c) removing the hydrogen sulfide from the gas obtained in step (b) to obtain a reduced total sulfur-containing product gas. ŕ
