Attenuated mutant Salmonella bacteria in which one or more genes homologous to genes within Salmonella pathogenicity island 2(SPI2) have been inactivated are provided for use in safe, efficacious vaccines. Preferably one or more of the secretion system apparatus ssaT, ssaJ, ssaC or ssaM genes, have been inactivated.
