A process for preparing hydrocarbons from a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst is carried out in a reactor comprising a packed bed of supported catalyst comprising a group VIII metal, which is present at least in the metallic form. The supported catalyst comprises an external surface comprising the catalytically active metal. The packed bed has a void content of more than 50%v and a specific area of more than 10 cm2/cm3, which is calculated, as the total external surface area of the particles relative to the bed volume. The group VIII metal is cobalt.
