A gaming machine has a display means and a game controller arranged to control images of symbols on the display means. The game controller is arranged to play a game wherein one or more random events are caused to be displayed on the display means and, if a predefined winning event occurs, the machine awards a prize. When a game played results in a feature being awarded, to arrive at a determination of a result of the feature, the control means selects a pathway having a number of steps. Each step relates to a special outcome with the number of steps taken along the pathway varying randomly from one feature to the next.
