Disclosed are a series of genes are identified in Group B Streptococcus, the products of which may be located on the outer surface of the organism. The genes, or functional fragments thereof, may be useful in the preparation of therapeutics, e.g. vaccines for the immunisation of a patient against microbial infection. In particular, these genes are homologous to Ornithine Carbamoyltransferase ( OCT ) which is a catalyst for the second step in the urea cycle converting ornithine to citrulline in eukaryotes, and is responsible for the conversion of citrulline to ornithine and carbamoyl in prokaryotes, which assists in the protection of the prokaryotes from acid damage.
