System for nationally and internationally identifying motor vehicles

A system for nationally or internationally identifying motor vehicles comprises at least one passive transponder in each motor vehicle, in which a unique code is stored, at least one reader for reading out the code, and a central computer having a data file, in which the codes of the transponders of the motor vehicles are stored together with other data of the motor vehicles concerned and of their registered owner, wherein an alarm indicator may be added to each code and wherein each portable reader can be coupled or is coupled to the central computer in order to compare one or more of the codes read out with the data stored in the data file. In this way, a highly efficient internationally operating identification system is provided.
