The set of rare earth catalysts produced by hydrothermal synthesis comprises products of formula M(SO4)2H3O where M is a rare-earth cation. Also claimed is a process synthesizing the catalysts. The process reacts a mixture of a rare-earth salt, propylamine and dimethyl sulfoxide as a source of sulfate, with several days heating at autogenic pressure. The cooled products, filtered and washed with water and then alcohol, are advantageous in e.g. hydrogenation of olefins.
