The invention relates to a method of obtaining a biomass of lutein-rich Muriellopsis microalga through the culture thereof in an open pond system which is agitated and exposed to adverse weather. The inventive method can be used to achieve high productivity values both for the biomass and the lutein carotenoid. In addition, said method can be used to widen the area of the culture process, thereby enabling large quantities of lutein-rich biomass to be obtained while maintaining the composition and quality of the product.
