A novel amino acid dysiherbaine represented by the following general formula, salts thereof, and biological precursors thereof: formula (1) The acid is a non-NMDA glutamate receptor agonist and serves as the material of study for elucidating the functions of nerve cell death and central neurotransmission wherein glutamate receptors participate and for developing glutamate receptor blockers. It is prepared by extracting a marine sponge of, for example, Dysidea herbacea with water and purifying the extract by means of liquid chromatography using Sephadex LH20 or the like and HPLC using C18 columns by employing the toxicity against mice as the index.
