PURPOSE: A method and a data structure for indexing the XML(eXtensible Markup Language) processing a regular path expression query on an RDB(Relational DataBase) are provided to efficiently support the XML regular path expression query by interpreting it using the same method in spite of a difference in an expression method of a user. CONSTITUTION: The path information is extracted from a document including the path information for an information source. The path ID information respectively matched with the path information and the index flag information are inputted from the user, and are stored in a path lookup table storing part(710). In case that the index flag information is a constant value, the start and the end node ID information for each path ID are received from the user, and are stored in the extended edge table storing part(720). The path ID information matched with the path is found out by searching the path expression information matched with the regular path expression inputted from the user(740). The start and the end ID node information matched with the path ID information are found out from the extended edge table storing part(750).
