PURPOSE: Provided is a method for preparing chiral 1,2-diol derivatives having a high optical purity and chemical purity from chiral epoxides having a relatively low optical purity, by using a chiral salen catalyst. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the step of carrying out stereo-selective hydrolysis of chiral epoxide derivatives in the presence of a chiral salen catalyst represented by formula 1 to form chiral 1,2-diol derivatives, wherein R1, R2, R'1, R'2 and R3 represent a 4-membered to a 10-membered carbocycle or heterocycle by forming a ring all together; each of X1 through X8 represents H or t-butyl; each of Y1 and Y2 is H; M is a metal element selected from the group consisting of Co, Cr, Mn, Fe, Mo and Ni; L represents B or Al; Q is a halogen atom; and n is an integer of 0-4.
