PURPOSE: A stress-induced promoter derived from rice is provided. The promoter effectively operates in monocotyledonous plants, and gives improved stress-tolerance to the monocotyledonous plants including grains. CONSTITUTION: The stress-induced promoter derived from rice comprises (a) DNA having the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO:1 or SEQ ID NO:2; or (b) DNA which is hybridized with DNA having the nucleotide sequence complementary to the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO:1 or SEQ ID NO:2 under stringent conditions and expresses the stress-induced promoter activity, wherein the stress is dehydration stress, low temperature stress or salt stress. A recombinant vector containing the stress-induced promoter derived from rice is provided. A transgenic plant is produced by transforming a plant with the recombinant vector containing the stress-induced promoter derived from rice, wherein the plant is a monocotyledonous plant.
