PHARMACEUTICAL COMPOSITION CONTAINING NONPOLAR SOLVENT-SOLUBLE EXTRACT OF GANODERMA APPLANATUM OR POLYPHENOL FRACTION SEPARATED THEREFROM CAPABLE OF BEING USED IN PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF DIABETES MELLITUS OR DISEASES ASSOCIATED WITH DIABETES MELLITUS

PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition containing a nonpolar solvent-soluble extract of Ganoderma applanatum or a polyphenol fraction separated therefrom having excellent inhibiting activity against aldose reductase to suppress the accumulation of final products of saccharification. It can be used in prevention and treatment of Diabetes Mellitus or diseases associated with Diabetes Mellitus such as hyperglycemia, atherosclerosis, microangiopathy, kidney disease, heart disease, diabetic retinopathy and one or more combinations of other diabetic eye diseases. CONSTITUTION: The pharmaceutical composition for prevention and treatment of Diabetes Mellitus contains a nonpolar solvent-soluble extract of Ganoderma applanatum, a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, carrier or excipient. The nonpolar solvent-soluble extract of Ganoderma applanatum is obtained by the steps: cutting dry Ganoderma applanatum, extracting in a polar solvent such as water, methanol or butanol, filtering and concentrating under reduced pressure; dissolving the obtained polar solvent-soluble extract in a nonpolar solvent such as hexane, chloroform, methylene chloride and ethyl acetate, fractioning with a separatory funnel and filtering to give a nonpolar solvent-soluble extract; fractioning a water layer with a polar solvent such as butanol, water or the like and then filtering to give polar solvent-solvent extract.
