PURPOSE: A method and a system for generating a motion vector of an interpolated image using an adaptive bidirectional motion estimation method are provided to obtain more accurate and smoother motion vector field and reproduce a natural virtual interpolated image. CONSTITUTION: Frame images and a temporal position constant indicating a temporal position of an interpolated image to be interpolated between the frame images are received(S500), and maximum and minimum block sizes of the interpolated image and sizes of search regions of the frame images are determined(S510). The interpolated image is split into a predetermined number of blocks based on the maximum block size and the first search region is set in the frame images to carry out bidirectional block matching of each of the blocks(S520). A block is split into a predetermined number of sub-blocks(S540), the second search region is set in the frame images using motion vectors of blocks adjacent to the block(S570), bidirectional matching is executed for the second search region to obtain a motion vector of each of the sub-blocks(S580). Each sub-block is set as a new block until the size of the sub-block becomes less than the minimum block size and the step of obtaining the motion vector of each sub-block is repeated to generate a motion vector of each block of the interpolated image.
