PURPOSE: A method for compensating for a back light of a camera and a subject to be pictured is provided to compensate for back light data and subject data at the back of a subject to be pictured, which are applied to image data of the subject while taking a picture of the subject with a camera, thereby obtaining a clearer subject image. CONSTITUTION: A terminal user takes a picture of a subject to be pictured by using a terminal camera(501). Image data of the subject is inputted to an image input portion as image data(502). Back light data and subject data are detected in a back light/subject detector(503). A back light/subject compensator compares the back light data with the subject data(504). If the back light data is bigger than the subject data, a maximum value of the subject data is subtracted from a maximum value of the back light data, and the result value is set as a back light data value(505). A maximum value of substantial subject data is subtracted from the maximum value of the back light data, and the result value is set as a subject data value(506). A level converter converts levels of the back light data value and subject data value, respectively(507), and compares sizes of the converted subject data and the back light data(508). If the subject data is bigger than the back light data, an AGC(Automatic Gain Controller) performs an automatic gain control process for a corresponding data(509), and then transmits the result to a CODEC portion(510).
