Vehicle roof liner stiffener component manufacture involves compression of outer layers against tool faces by an expandable foam core

Facing layers(3,4) of the sandwich structure are pressed against the faces of tool halves(11.1,11.2) and shaped by the force of an expanding foam material(S) which subsequently forms a rigid foam core. Foam material(S) is sprayed(5) onto one(3) of the facing layers outside the foaming tool(11) and the upper layer(4) is held by vacuum on the upper tool half(11.2). Both facing layers with a foamable layer between them are fed continuously as a band to a dancing roll(10) which acts as a storage system and then feeds the band intermittently to the foaming tool. Foamed components are cut away from the band material on the output side of the press.
