The method involves determining coefficients characteristic of system output behavior from at least one representative measurement graph, determining discrete system states from the coefficients, assigning the discrete system states as input data to a probability network and processing the input data in the network to compute a diagnosis result. At least one system characterizing parameter is fed into the computation of the diagnosis result. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) an on-board computer system for a motor vehicle for implementing the inventive method (b) and a diagnostic system for an on-board computer system.
