A lifting platform (3) onto which at least one coffin is placed is adjustable in height by means of a chain-driven lifting arrangement and is guided along a support frame (2). In the coffin's raised position there is space beneath it for at least one further coffin. The chain drive each incorporates four synchro-driven elevator drive mechanisms (14,15) each of which comprises two vertically spaced apart chain-wheels (17-20) around which runs an elevator chain (21,22) to which the lifting platform is fixed.
