The method involves detecting coolant temperature of and other operating parameters and controlling devices for influencing the thermal balance in the engine accordingly. Several main states and at least one superimposition state of the engine-cooling circuit system associated with different coolant temperatures and/or other operating parameter values are defined. The influencing devices are controlled according to the prevailing state. The method involves detecting the temperature of a coolant and other operating parameters and controlling devices (14,24,38,40) for influencing the thermal balance in the engine (10) accordingly. Several main states and at least one superimposition state of the engine-cooling circuit system that are associated with different coolant temperatures and/or other operating parameter values are defined. The influencing devices are controlled according to the prevailing state. A change from the superimposition state can only occur to the associated main state and vice-versa.
