The system allows REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep but wakes patient when deep sleep starts. The depth of sleep is monitored by use of a stimulation system (1a) to apply periodic stimuli to the sole to the foot. A sensor (2a) monitors movement of the big toe. When deep sleep starts, the Babinski reflex is triggered (raising of the big toe when the sole of the foot is stimulated), and a registration circuit (3a) triggers action of a stimulator (4a) to wake the person.
