Production of steam, especially very pure steam, involves passing a fuel and an oxidizer in a stoichiometric ratio into a reaction zone, passing the hot reaction gases into a vaporizing zone, introducing water in liquid and/or vaporous form into the vaporizing zone, vaporizing and/or super-heating the water with the reaction gases, and catalytically post-combusting the reaction mixture containing water vapor. An Independent claim is also included for a steam generator for producing steam, especially very pure steam, comprising a combustion and vaporizing chamber (2) having a reaction zone (14) for the exothermic reaction of a fuel and an oxidizer and a vaporizing zone (15) for vaporizing and/or super-heating an injected amount of water, a feed unit for the fuel and the oxidizer, an ignition unit (1) for igniting part of the fuel/oxidizer mixture, a feed unit (12) for water (6) and an outlet nozzle (7) for the reaction mixture. A catalytic post-combustion unit (3) is downstream of the reaction and vaporizing chamber.
