The gearbox (3) is coupled via a clutch (22) that can be disengaged to an engine (2) with a controllable mechanical engine brake (33). The method involves keeping the clutch engaged during a shift from an old gear to a new gear, reducing the gearbox input torque, disengaging the old gear on reaching a null input torque, synchronizing the new gear using the mechanical engine brake, engaging the new gear on reaching the synchronous revolution rate.
