The method involves inhibiting gear disengagement in the gearbox arrangement (26) while the driver is demanding the output of drive torque from the drive unit (12) if the driver demands a gear shift into neutral while a gear is engaged and the drive unit is delivering drive torque to the gearbox arrangement. If the driver then fully releases an operating element (62) the gearbox arrangement automatically shifts to neutral.
