Production of monomeric uronic acids (I) involves (a) fermenting a bacterial strain producing a polyuronic acid (II) formed from (I) units, (b) isolating (II) from the supernatant of the fermentation broth, (c) hydrolyzing (II) and (d) isolating (I) from the hydrolysis product.
