The procedure for the running of an internal combustion engine (1) fuelled by especially methane gas entails recording by sensors the running parameters of the engine and transmitting them to an engine management unit which regulates the operating mode by adjusting of the air/fuel mixture. Exhaust gases resulting from combustion are fed to a catalytic cleaner. To create an exothermal reaction in the exhaust gas, secondary air (4) and methane gas regulated for it are fed into the exhaust gases.
