The procedure entails determining the first portion of recirculated exhaust gas in the amount of mixture recirculated as a whole to the engine from measurements and/or calculations of the water steam portion of the clean air volume returned to the engine, the water steam portion of the whole amount of exhaust gas produced by the engine, and the water steam portion of the mixture volume returned to the engine. The first portion of the recirculated exhaust gas volume is adjusted to a predetermined reference portion. An Independent claim is included for a system for carrying out the proposed procedure which includes sensors(SA,SG,SL) to take the aforesaid measurements.
