The device has a telescopic shaft, a further shaft coupled to steered vehicle wheels, a torsion rod, a motor unit, a shaft rotation sensing arrangement and a controller that controls the motor unit depending on the angular different between the shafts coaxial to the telescopic shaft and with a hollow motor shaft. The end of the nearer hollow telescopic shaft remote from the steering wheel is axially inserted into the motor unit. The device has a telescopic shaft (14,15) with two coaxial hollow shafts joined to a steering wheel, a further shaft (28) coupled to steered vehicle wheels and axially fixed to the hollow shaft remote from the steering wheel via a torsion rod (30), a motor unit (22) with a drive connection to the further shaft, a sensing arrangement (34,35) providing signals representing rotations of the telescopic and further shafts and a controller that controls the motor unit depending on the angular different between the shafts. The motor unit is arranged coaxially relative to the telescopic shaft and with a hollow motor shaft (25) connected to or forming the further shaft. The end of the nearer hollow telescopic shaft remote from the steering wheel is axially inserted into the motor unit.
