A branch stub pipe (1) is welded to a main pipe (7) by fusing a flange (2) by means of a heating coil (3). It is held in place by a pressure plate (8), which is loaded from a tension plate (9) through springs (11, 12). Force is transmitted to the tension plate from inside the pipe (1) through a pressure rod (10) by an actuator applied to the end socket (25). The spring force is distributed through an intermediate plate (14). Electrical contacts (19, 20) at the ends of a cross-bar (18) connect the wires of (5, 6) of the heating coil (3) to external terminals (21, 22). For pipes (7) that are not large enough to provide manual internal access, a robotic actuator can be used to provide the force.
