To coat the surfaces of metal fittings, and especially sanitary fittings of fine steel, at least one layer is applied of copper, nickel, or a copper-nickel alloy. The coated metal surface is treated mechanically by brushing and/or sand blasting, and at least one further layer is applied of nickel-tungsten and/or palladium-nickel. The coated metal fitting can be covered by a sealing layer.
