Operating hours counter (1) for an agricultural machine (5) is contained within a housing and operates without an external power supply. It operates by detecting vibrations and works only when mounted in an operating position. When the counter housing is removed from the machine the counter display is reset to zero. The switch for activating the counter can be a mercury or inclination switch. The counter can be expanded by incorporation of a radio connection for transmission of operating hours to a central computer.
