The invention relates to a running time meter (10) for a tool producing vibrations or oscillations during operation, especially a hand tool driven by a combustion engine, e.g. a motor saw. The invention aims at providing a running time meter, for instance, of a motor saw, that detects running time in an easy and reliable manner and that does not require uncontrolled intervention by the user. To this end, the running time meter (10) comprises a contact sensor (11) fixed to the tool responding to the oscillations produced, in addition to a metering circuit (18) that is connected to the contact sensor (11) and that continues to meter at given time intervals when the contact sensor (11) detects oscillations of the tool during operation.
