New organic cyanoborates, used as ionic liquid, non-aqueous electrolyte, phase transfer catalyst or intermediate e.g. for liquid crystal compound, pharmaceutical or plant protection agent, are prepared via alkali metal salt

Organic tetracyano-, tricyanofluoro-, dicyanodifluoro- and cyanotrifluoro-borates (I) are new, with the exception of tetrabutylammonium tetracyanoborate (IA). Organic tetracyano-, tricyanofluoro-, dicyanodifluoro- and cyanotrifluoro-borates of formula (I) are new. Kt + [BF n(CN) 4 - n] - (I) n : 0, 1, 2 or 3; and Kt +an organic cation with the exception of tetrabutylammonium tetracyanoborate (IA) of formula (I; where n = 0; and Kt + = [N(C 4H 9) 4] +). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) preparation of (I), except (IA); (2) preparation of alkali metal tetracyanoborates (II); (3) preparation of alkali metal tetracyano-, tricyanofluoro-, dicyanodifluoro- and cyanotrifluoro-borates (III).
