The method of operating a multi-cylinder four stroke internal combustion engine (10) for a vehicle involves injecting liquid (41) fuel directly into the combustion chambers (14) of the engine while at rest. The combustion chamber charge is then ignited for starting. A gaseous fuel (45) is also injected into the combustion chamber for a direct start.
