The method involves controlling a separate drive (EM) to change the angle position between a crankshaft (KW) and a cam shaft (NW) via an adjusting mechanism (VM) until the separate drive turns the crankshaft via mechanical propellants (TM, TR) so that a working medium is concentrated in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine by a piston. The position of the piston is determined using a positioning element (PB) for identifying a cylinder of the combustion engine in which the working medium is concentrated. The fuel is injected into the cylinder for starting the internal combustion engine. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an engine starting device comprising a control unit (2) a motor vehicle comprising an electrical machine.
