Drive device for positioning a tool or unit, has a pneumatic motor (1) that can be coupled to a gearbox (2) and encoder (3). The gearbox has a drive shaft that functions as a positioning shaft (12) and with which the tool or unit to be positioned meshes. A programmable control unit (4) is connected on its input side, via a signal line (8), to the encoder and via a further signal line (9) to a pneumatic controller (5) that is connected via compressed air lines (6, 7) to the pneumatic motor.
