A mounting plate for fitting an awning to a wall has a lower lip forming a support groove (20) open to the top and an upper ratchet grip (24) facing downwards. The back of the base plate for the awning has a lower spine (23) which is fitted into the support groove. The awning is then secured simply by swinging upwards until the ratchet grips an upper profile (25) of the base plate. The ratchet grip is supported by an elastic element (28). Additional security is provided by threaded fasteners which prevent loosening of the mounting e.g. in windy conditions.
