The composite material comprises one or more knitted layer(2) and one or more fiber fleece layers(1',3'), each of natural fibers and a thermoplastic and/or thermosetting matrix material. A knitted layer(2) is placed between two fiber fleece layers(1',3') to form a sandwich structure and the latter is then needled. Knitted layers may have right to left or left to right interlacing. Fleece layers are compressible and porous. An Independent claim is included for a process for manufacturing the composite material in which one or more knitted layers and fleece layers are combined with a thermoplastic and/or thermosetting plastic material.
